Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

2014-07-27 14.41.20

1 Syawal is the day where Muslims all over the world celebrate after a full month of fasting. BUT that doesn’t mean you forget about all the good things you’ve practised during the past month. Ramadhan could have changed you for the better, good for you!

This is my very first (of many more to come) Raya away from family, away from home. Hate to be out working, but glad that it’s nearing the end of my trip so I wouldn’t miss MUCH. The celebrations were held at our place this year, hence I got my baby sis to Skype call me. Got to have a chat with my parents, grandma and sisters before the crowd came, and when they did… I got to see them all.

Watching the chaos, seeing the happy faces from miles away made me forget for a few minutes that I was alone in a cold hotel room. When I eventually pressed the button to hang up, I was overwhelmed by the silence that filled the room. No more kids laughing, aunties chattering and my cousins trying to fill me in on the latest goss. *SOBS* This weekend will make up for lost time, I promise!

Arriving in Melbourne at almost 3 pm today, I was ecstatic because it was the final leg of my super long work trip. What was more awesome, were the company waiting for me as soon as I arrived at the hotel. Four of my good friends were there too, and we’ve decided to dress up in our baju kurung and have a little bit of fun.

My baju kurung was something I made for home use, hence it wasn’t as fancy as Ash’s and Tia’s. Tia made sambal sotong and had lontong that was so damn delish, I can’t wait to go home!

Meeting them on the last day of my trip is by far THE MOST memorable thing that happened to me the past two weeks. Now, I am going to countdown the hours I get to board that aircraft and make my way home.

Toodles!

WHAT IS THAT?  You may ask. It’s one of the yummiest things in the world that is so uniquely Japanese. It’s simply a marinated cod roe and it’s DELICIOUS! They come in a variety of flavours, and besides the original, I’ve encountered the spicy ones, the ones with seaweed and lemon flavoured ones. It’s traditionally eaten with onigiri or you can have them on sushi… but recently I’ve tried them on their own as well, and I loved it. It’s pretty salty, with a crunchy texture… feels like a combination of bubble and sand on the tongue. Strange, but yummy.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetMentaiko is most popular in Fukuoka where they sell them in boxes like the ones above. Those were pretty pricey as they’re packed in pretty boxes and meant to be given as gifts. If you try the supermarkets and local mentaiko specialty stores, you might get them at a steal. I got mine in Fukuoka for 500 yen (~SGD6) and they kindly packed mine in a little cooler film so I could take them back on my flight back to Narita!

I love mentaiko sauce on EVERYTHING. Grilled scallop, blow torched salmon sushi, prawns, pasta… you name it! I can probably get the sauce at NTUC Finest in Singapore, but they are so ridiculously expensive. Perks of my job: I get to go to Japan itself to stock up! Heh. Heh. Heh.

Weekly Wishes // 06

ww6LAST WEEK’S TWO WEEKS AGO WISHES:

1. Restock travel staples supplies
Nope! Not yet. I still have yet to go out and grab some hairspray. Will do so….. today.2. Meet up with Claudia
Yes! Hung out with her, albeit briefly, at different points of the past two weeks. Going for dinner with her and the girls tonight… and it’ll probably be my last chance seeing her till the next she’s in Singapore… or when I fly to her.

3. Do some revision
I am CERTIFIED to fly for the next one year. Hee. The two-day assessments had been challenging, though nothing beats the intensity of our initial training. It was also not easy being the only 787-trained crew in this batch of assessments. It meant extra work, extra stuff to remember…. and no fellow crew to help me out. But I NAILED IT! :D

THIS WEEK’S WISHES: (It’s gonna be all about food… don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

1. A bowl of Tom Kha (noodles with coconut soup)
This particular Thai place serves the best Thai food in Surfer’s Paradise! The Tom Yum is legit spicy, making you crave for more! I can’t remember what’s it called.. but stay tuned! I might feature it for next week’s WIAW. :D

2. That Italian place.
The restaurant features a Marche-like dining concept, where you’d choose your pasta and how you’d like it done and they’d cook it right in front of you. It’s pretty pricey… but quite worth the penny spent.

3. Try something new
Steak? Kebab? Korean? We can never go hungry at the Surfer’s Paradise. If we ever run out of choices, there’s always its bar/cafe/restaurants haven neighbour, Broadbeach.

4. Get my sushi fix.
No matter how many times I’ve flown into Japan, one can never get sick of their sushi. There are pricey ones, and also those 100 yen sushi joints we so often flock.

It’s going to be yet another long, long trip for me. It’s going to stretch all the way past Hari Raya, so I am a little depressed… I kid, more like.. A LOT. But I had the most relaxing five days off prior to this where I got to sit down and work on my blog, spend time with friends I don’t get to see often… and JUST when I thought I won’t be seeing Ummar the Ass for another half a month or so because he’s ever so busy.. he surprised me. I asked for one ice cream, and I got 8.. okay we shared, still can’t believe we finished the whole thing! Plus, he’s my new best friend because I get to eat all the cherries! Do you know how rare it is for him to be nice to me? THANK YOU! x

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with b4 presetA pain in the butt since we first met in 2006. We’ve gone through hell and back together. I wonder what would it take for our friendship to break, because right now… we’ve survived 8 years of bullshit (and counting :P)

Oh, lemme add one more wish to the list:
❤ Meet Mazlan on Sunday.
POLAROID (1 of 1)Because, MISSES. It’s gonna be a touch-and-go meeting in the Gold Coast… yet another I-arrive-and-you-leave kinda meet up. At least he gets to celebrate raya at home, this lucky duck. And because I love him, I’d need to either stay awake till he leaves… or he comes and bangs on my door. Whatever works.

Hope your week will be as eventful!

P.S. GERMANY WINS THE WORLD CUP!

WORLD CUP 2014 FINALS: Germany vs. Argentina

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 presetIt’s gonna be the final showdown tonight! While some of my friends are heading out to watch the match, I am going to be streaming it from the comforts of my room (boring I know). May the best team win!

I really am hoping that Germany will win because a certain Argentinian supporter and I made a wager. If Germany loses tonight, I would have to don the blue-and-white stripey jersey on 4 occasions. If Germany wins, it’s vice versa. There’s no way in hell I am gonna be wearing the Argentina jersey, so… GERMANY WILL WIN. See where my finger is? That’s where the fourth star will be this time tomorrow.

GO GO DEUTSCHLAND!

Shiok Burger!

I’m not usually a fan of burgers, but I love satay. Combining the two together would be a uniquely Singaporean experience. Satay is essentially marinated meat skewers barbecued to perfection. Mmm~

The Shiok Shiok Satay burger comes in two different varieties: Chicken and Beef. Of the two, I preferred the beef because well, I love my cow. And boy, were they generous with the patties. Two slices of beef patties were jammed in between two fluffy buns, along with cucumber slices and onion strips. The sweet peanut sauce that almost always goes with satay wasn’t forgotten too. Wished they drizzled more though. The chicken burger was no less delicious. The meat was tender and succulent. After the heavy meal, we got to wash it all down with the refreshing Strawberry McFizz drink. Love the little strawberry bits.

This marks my very first Blogger invite event and I enjoyed every minute of it, meeting other local bloggers and enjoying a meal together. Of course, where there’s food… there’s some entertainment as well. We were given a crossword puzzle to solve to test our proficiency in SINGLISH! The fastest three Bloggers with the most accurate answers won an awesome Singlish notebook (I was one of them. Hee!) I’ve posted the questions below… my fellow Singaporean readers, please feel free to solve ‘em in the comments!

What I Ate Wednesday / 05

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

This is a typical Singaporean breakfast, at least just one type of the many that we enjoy. It consists of half-boiled eggs with dark/light soy sauce and white pepper for condiments, toasts with generous spread of kaya and butter and tea/coffee or beverage of choice.

My perfect kind of soft-boiled egg has fully formed whites and a semi-hard yolk on the outside and runny on the inside. Sounds almost impossible to make eh? But the kopitiam (local eateries) in Singapore nailed it. I’ve yet to taste Japan’s onsen tamago.. maybe they’ll match up to the ones they make right here at home. Till then, I shall continue perfecting my soft-boil egg making skills.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the perfect soft boiled eggs?

From the Batam of my heart

Batam (2 of 110)Processed with VSCOcam with f1 preset

Excuse the corny header, my friend Fad is to blame for it. What was supposed to be a day trip with the girlfriends evolved into a much needed getaway! It was Ming’s first time to Batam and because she needed to pay for visa, we decided to extend our day trip to a one night stay. Leaving the boys at home crying out ‘Bo jio!’ (that’s Singlish for why u no invite us), we hopped on a 45-minute ferry ride to Batam, Indonesia.

Our ferry brought us to Batam Centre ferry terminal where the queue was long, and the immigration officers darn rude. I’ve been into Batam countless of times through different terminals and I’ve never encountered such rudeness. Did you know that you aren’t allowed to talk at all while waiting to get your passport stamped? No usage of phones and cameras were understandable, but talking… even whispering was prohibited? It’s not like people were talking or laughing loudly.

We had those officers yelling at people to keep quiet, yelling at people to go to the next available booth, and sad to say that the immigration officers stamping our passports didn’t exhibit any kind of professional courtesy at all. Some unfortunate people who were caught talking were denied entry into the island because they ‘didn’t respect rules’. I had a nasty encounter with an immigration officer myself because I whispered a few short sentences to Nurul, where he threatened that he could send us back if he wanted to. Not wanting to cause any trouble, I muttered my utmost insincere sorries to him and got it over and done with. I had no respect to give because he didn’t extend any. Just because they had the power to do whatever they wanted, does not mean he could make the lives of the people who were coming into the country to spend miserable.

Was that how Indonesia welcomed visitors into their country?

Anyway, lucky for the three of us, we managed to pass through customs without much drama. I was still pissed but didn’t let such an unsavoury welcome ruin my day. We checked into Novotel Batam and was pleased to note that of all the Novotels I’ve stayed at around the globe, this one was best looking. Because Sunday was the first day of fasting, they provide an early morning breakfast that starts at 3 am to cater to guests who’d be fasting in addition to the normal breakfast buffet that began from 6-10 am.

We did what everyone does in Batam. We booked a two-hour full body massage at Everyday Massage and had our aching muscles pounded at and backs cracked. My masseuse was pretty amazing, massaging all the sore points and paying special attention to my lower back when I told her that it ached.

And then we ate. Bakso (beef ball noodles), Nasi ayam penyet (smashed chicken rice), es monster (equivalent to Singapore’s ice kacang)… we ate them all! The es monster was a little strange though, in addition to the jelly, kidney beans, corn and other usual stuff at the bottom of the ice, there was bread.. and fermented tapioca. Erm, no. Luckily, we each had a bottle of Teh Sosro to wash them all down or out.

It was a simple and fun getaway, managing to strike off some things in my list of to-do stuff. Despite the hiccup at the beginning, everything else went perfectly. One of the souvenirs you should get while in Batam are their layer cakes. Our really nice driver who was supposed to take us to the ferry terminal made a pit stop at his sister’s bakery where Ming got a box of prune layer cake for less than SGD 30. The smell of cake fresh out of the oven is just heavenly. batam (14 of 14) batam (13 of 14)batam (12 of 14)

Still bummed that I didn’t manage to do the Chocolate Spa though. Oh well, there’s always next time. Maybe we’ll invite the boys along too.
